The Department of Mathematics is mourning for
Prof. Dr. Wolgang Müller (9.2.1942 - 19.12.2006),
the former head of the chair
"Representation Theory of Algebras" (Mathematics IV).
2006/07/20:
At July 20, 2006 there will be a series of lectures on Lie theory
at the building NW II, seminar room S 82 and lecture room
H 19 (start: 01.00 pm).

2006/07/08:
The First Day of Mathematics
in Bayreuth took place at July 08, 2006 and was held for
school kids, teachers, parents and other people interested in
mathematics. It was organized by
Prof. Rambau (Mathematics in Economy).
A rich programm was offered as well as a competetion in mathematics,
in which school kids could win attractive prizes.

In the time period 2005/04/25-2005/04/26 there will be a
Workshop of the GAMM-Fachausschuss
"Dynamik und Regelungstheorie" which is also organized
by the local coordinator
Prof. Lars Grüne.
2005/03/16-2005/03/18:
In the time period 2005/03/16-2005/03/18 there will be a
PASCAL Tutorial and Workshop with the topic
"Machine
Learning, Support Vector Machines, and Large Scale Optimization"
(The State-of-the-Art in Theory, Software, and Applications) at the
Centre for
Sciences at the Castle of Thurnau which is organized by
Prof. John Shawe-Taylor
(School of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton) and
Prof. Klaus
Schittkowski.
2005/02/23:
The
34th
Colloquium "Mathematics-Didactics" will take place in
February, 23rd of 2005 (starting at 10:30 a.m., lecture room H 19,
building NW II). The colloquium is organized for teachers for
mathematics in high schools, colleges of further education and
secondary modern schools in the
regions "Oberfranken" and the northern part of "Oberpfalz".
The four talks will deal on the Bavarian competition on mathematics
(StR A. Kliem from Würzburg), on the projekt
DigiO = Digital Oberstufe (Dr. M. Bauch
from the publishing house Klett-Verlag in Stuttgart), on
fractal polyhedra (Dr. C. Pöppe from the publishing house
Spektrum-Verlag in Heidelberg) and on paths, trees and tours
(Prof. Dr. P. Gritzmann from the Technical University
in Munich).

The working group 'Dynamical Geometry' meets for the second time
and organizes a
workshop on the subject
'Dynamical Geometry' which takes part in the
BLK programm
'Sinus-Transfer'
The organizer of the meeting is the

Mathematics and Didactics
(Prof. Dr. P. Baptist).
The main focus lies in possibilites in modern teaching which are
offered by dynamical mathematics. The basis herefor is the
software tool
GEONExT for dynamical mathematics.

The educational
meeting for teachers in secondary modern schools
which is part of the 6th Mathematical Week-end in Bayreuth
begins at 10:00 a.m. in the lecture room H 19 in the building
NW II.

33rd

regions "Oberfranken" and the northern part of "Oberpfalz".
The four talks will deal on the development of electronical
computers (Prof. Dr. Frank Lempio,
Bayreuth), on dynamical work sheets as a way to individual
learning (Prof. Dr. Peter Baptist,
Matthias Ehmann,
Carsten Miller, Bayreuth), on comprehensive learning environments in the elementary algebra
(Gregor Wieland, PHS and Universitity of
Fribourg/Switzerland) as well as on knots as a way to mathematical
theory (Prof. Dr. Burkhard Kümmerer, University of Darmstadt).

The Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science will organize a colloquium in honour of the
80th birthday of
Prof. Herbert Zeitler
(former: professor at the chair
Mathematics
and Didactics).
Dr. P. Müller (leader of the department for high schools
at the Bavarian Ministery for Education and the Arts) will speak (among
others) at the colloquium.
2003/09/22-2003/09/26:
There will be a German-Israeli Sommer School on the topic
"Modern Optimization and its Applications in
Engineering II" at the
Centre
for Sciences at the Castle of Thurnau between 2003/09/22 and
2003/09/26.
The organizers are
Prof. K. Schittkowski (Professor for Applied Computer Science)
together with Prof. A. Ben-Tal and Prof. A. Nemirovski
(Technion Haifa, Israel).
The seminar is supported by the Minerva
foundation.

There will be a course about the topic
"Symplectic
4-Manifolds and Algebraic Surfaces" at the
"Centro Internazionale Matematico Estivo" (CIME)
in Centraro (Cosenza, Italy) between 2003/09/02 and 2003/09/10.

At the university, 31 pupils are being honoured as winners of the regional
competetion in Upper Franconia which is part of the
Mathematical Olympic Games of Fürth
(FüMO). The winners received book vouchers which are donated by
the Assocation
of the University of Bayreuth.
Prof. T. Peternell
(chair "Mathematics I") is the municipal organizer of this
competetion.
